It’s hard to think of a more generic term than “content” – “generating content” can seem equally vague. Depending on how fast and loose you like to play with definitions, you could say cooking food is “generating content”.
Let’s get more specific.
When we’re talking about generating content in Mississauga, we mean creating unique pieces of media for use on your website. More specifically, our focus will be on generating content that serves the dual purpose of bolstering your SEO efforts and your sales funnel.
We hope you’re content with this explanation of content. Let’s start creating.
Why generate content?
When it comes to content, the why is the most important question. We gave the most simple answer to our why above: we want to boost sales and SEO.
Here, we ask another why: why does content improve SEO and sales? And, perhaps as importantly, what kinds of content best serve our goals?
The answer to these questions is fairly straightforward. Content improves SEO when it:
- Ties into keywords you want to rank for
- Encourages traffic to flow from SERPs to your web pages
- Entices users to stay on your page for a long time
- Is relevant to your industry and location
Content boosts your sales when it:
- Answers users’ questions
- Entices users to learn more about your business
- Encourages users to browse and purchase your products or services
Fortunately, these qualities are not mutually exclusive – far from it. Good content is thought-provoking. It teaches people something they didn’t know, and encourages them to learn more. Remember: the people reading your web pages almost certainly found them on Google, using keywords that you want to rank for.
In other words, you just need to give the people what they want.
Finding the right keywords
To narrow down what kind of content you should be creating, you need to start with keywords. Let’s say you run a spa in Mississauga. You might want to rank for keywords like “massage in Mississauga” or “facials in Creditville”. These are known as service-in-location (SIL) keywords. Brainstorm services that you offer, and locations in and around Mississauga (including the whole of Mississauga) where you want to increase sales.
You’ll want to use a keyword research tool to see which of these SILs are worth ranking for. Check out ahrefs’ list of free keyword research tools. The best keywords:
- Have a low level of competition
- Have a high number of searches
- Have commercial intent (the searcher wants to buy) or informational intent (the searcher wants to learn more about a topic)
Once you’ve found your keywords, you’ll start brainstorming topics that are associated with those keywords. For example, your spa might write a blog about “The 5 Most Popular Massages in Mississauga” or “How to keep your skin healthy during the winter”.
You’ll notice that the second topic doesn’t contain “Mississauga SEO” or any mention of facials, spas, or the like. We’ll handle all of that in the next section. Put on your writer’s hat – we’re going to blog.
Blogging in Mississauga
Your blog is where you tie everything together. You should be blogging a lot – at least once a week for most businesses. Don’t worry – there’s no end of topics to blog about.
When blogging, remember that your goal is to create content that people will actually want to read. The content you create needs to be unique – get creative, and you’ll find a new spin on even the most well trodden topics.
Fortunately, making your content unique is often as simple as making it relevant to Mississauga. For our “Keep your skin healthy during the winter” post, it’s easy to see how we can tie the content into Mississauga. Talk about how -30, with a wind chill, isn’t good for anyone’s skin, and how even though Mississaugans know how to bundle up, they might not know what fabrics are most likely to irritate the face. That kind of thing. Keep it locally relevant!
You should always avoid keyword stuffing in your blog – search engines, at this point, have a pretty good grasp of semantics. You will, however, want to include the keywords that you’re trying to rank for in your blog – “facials in Mississauga” is pretty easy to tie into a winter skin care article, for example.
Looking for inspiration? Use Google to search the keywords that you want to rank for, and see what blogs pop up. Then, write something better.
Other types of content
You might notice that non-blog content ranks highest for certain keywords. It’s common to see infographics, videos, and other media near or at the top of the SERPs.
When possible, you should match the highest ranking content – that is, if the highest ranking content is a video, make a video. If it’s an infographic, make an infographic. You get the idea.
You don’t (and shouldn’t) leave other types of media stranded without text, either. If you make an infographic, have a blog below it. When you make a YouTube video, consider transcribing the contents of the video and posting the transcription below the video. It makes it easier for search engines to understand the content being displayed, and it can be useful for users who, for whatever reason, can’t access non-text media files.
